5 Reasons I Stopped Sliding, Sweating, and Choosing Between Comfortable and Cute
Summary: I have bought a lot of slippers. The plush ones that turn into a sauna by the evening. The ones with no grip that nearly put me on the floor. The ones I would never answer the door in. So I stopped buying slippers and started wearing something built like a sock, with a rubber sole under it, that I am not embarrassed to be seen in. 10,000+ women made the same switch. Here is what we all worked out.

1. They Do Not Look Like Slippers

The problem with house shoes is that they announce themselves. Big, puffy, shapeless. You hear the doorbell and you either sprint for real shoes or you answer it looking like you have given up.
These read like a knit flat. I have answered the door in mine, taken the bins out, walked to the car and gone down to the mailbox, and nobody has ever looked twice.
2. I Stopped Reaching for the Wall in the Kitchen

This is the one I did not expect. I am a socks-in-the-house person, and socks on a wooden floor are how women my age end up on the floor.
The sole here is thin rubber with real grip. On tile, on laminate, on the one rug that always slid out from under me. I stopped bracing myself between the sink and the kettle. If you have ever put a hand out for the wall on your way across the kitchen, you know exactly what that is worth.
3. They Go On at 7 in the Morning and Stay On Until Bed

My old slippers were an evening thing. These go on with the kettle in the morning and come off at bedtime, and in between there is the laundry, the kitchen, the garden and the bins. No laces, no backs to fight with, no sitting on the stairs to get them on.
Nothing squeezes, which is the whole reason they stay on. The knit is wide where your toes are, so after 14 hours there is no red line across the top of your foot and nothing pressing on the little toe. After a lifetime of shoes that pinch, room to spread your toes feels strange for about a day. Then you stop noticing anything at all.
4. Knit, Not Plush, and My Feet Stopped Sweating

Plush is warm for 20 minutes and a sauna after that. The heat has nowhere to go. By the evening my feet were damp and I was pulling them off in front of the television.
These are knitted, so the air moves through the top. Warm, but dry, right through to bedtime. Mine breathe, and that is the part I could never get out of a fleece slipper.
